Why Creative Types and Traditional Office Jobs Don’t Mesh

The structure and security of a typical 9 to 5 position in an office setting can be a haven for most that need these aspects in their career choice. However, there are those that don’t need this type of career because they aren’t meant for the rigidness of these types of jobs. For those that enjoy taking risks or having more freedom to pursue creative outlets will find these positions stifling as they work day in, day out or at least attempt to do so. Finding positions that are more suitable for these types of workers will allow them greater success and happiness even in times of hardship for the economy. In this article, we’ll discuss in detail the reasons why 9 to 5 positions and creative people just don’t mesh.

1. Rigidity in structure When there are a lot of rules and regulations that need to be followed, there can be a stifling environment that will be considered intolerable to those that prefer more freedom of choice and will in getting objectives accomplished. When you’re a creative person, you’ll find having schedules and deadlines harder to keep as it prevents the creative process from being fully accessed.

Set Clocks Affect Performance – Those that enjoy the structure of a 9 to 5 day will have little trouble in meeting deadlines set for the day, meeting and even exceeding expectations for employers and clients alike. This is not the same for creative types who need more hours of the day to allow creativity and inspiration to find them before they can complete their current projects. While their goal of pleasing clients is the same, their process is set on a different time clock from those built for the professional settings of an office.

3. Independent Streak – When you want someone to take pride in their work and hold themselves accountable for their work, then you’ll want a creative type to complete the project. When this type is given an assignment, they expect the freedom in completing that assignment to be left to them. They don’t care for the rules or procedures set by someone else, but they will also request help when and if they need it. Keeping close tabs on them will only make them struggle to complete the task they’ve been given.

4. Tediousness of Day-to-Day – When the schedule for a creative type is set at the same time interval each day, they can find themselves quickly falling into a creativity rut where they struggle to find themselves and their passions for their work. This stifling of their inspiration can lead to unhappiness and poor job performance from this type of person compared to those more suited for the rigors of a professional office setting.

5. Grooves to a different beat – Rigid schedules and office structure isn’t necessarily right for everyone, especially those that prefer creativity and freedom. It’s not that they can’t function within these rules and regulations, they just won’t be happy or optimal performers for the company. By providing them some freedom to complete projects and allow them to set their own deadlines, they can function at a better pace than if they’re denied this.

6. Rules and Freedom don’t mix – When someone is used to setting their own schedule and how they use their own time, they won’t adjust very well to someone else calling the shots. They dislike having someone constantly watching their progress in an effort to speed them along when their best work will come from their freedom and ability to make their own decisions pertaining to time-frame, budget, and the task itself.

7. Flexible vs. Traditional – These creative types will find themselves in poor working conditions if they try to focus their energies in fields pertaining to medicine, law, and even marketing among others. While they are working towards helping others in some way, they aren’t accomplishing it through their harnessing of creative juices. While these types thrive on inspiration and autonomy, their counterparts will find these qualities most troublesome in keeping the creative ones motivated in their current position. This will result in frustrated feelings by everyone involved.

Finding the right position to fit your personality will help you, whether you’re a creative type or an ambitious, traditional type. When it comes to finding the right career for yourself, you should examine what makes you happiest as well as the best worker you can possibly be. As a traditional type, you’ll find the structured rigidity of 9 to 5 positions are your strong suit. On the other side of this, as a creative type, you’ll find more freedom and enjoyment in your career if you can find one that allows for no set work schedules except for the ones set by yourself along with the freedom to pursue your projects in your own way to meet and exceed a client’s expectations. So, get to know yourself before you settle on a career path and you’ll find yourself not regretting the choices you’ve made in that area of your life.
