Superfood is today’s buzzword for any nutritionally dense food that’s proven to be highly beneficial for one’s health, whether short or long term effects. It is mostly plant-based but can also pertain to fish and dairy which arrives heavily packed with the essential nutrients your body needs. Innovation and research constantly lead to vast discoveries, unraveling new exotic superfoods that catch people by surprise. The most popular foods that hold the title are Acai Berries, Kale, Salmon, Goji Berries and Avocado, just to name a few. Well, these were documented in 2014 and it’s time for them to move over, step down, and make way for the future with the newest superfoods of 2015! Say cheers to good health with this refreshing list:

1. Moringa

Also known as the miracle tree, the various parts of the moringa including its branches, leaves, roots, bark, flowers and seeds have served nutritional and medicinal purposes since ancient times. It has been part of the Ayurvedic tradition and is utilized until today in modern products that aim to revitalize the hair, skin, and nails, and can be acquired as a supplement in pill or powder form. The moringa fruit has unparalleled potency being comprised of 24% more iron than spinach, 21% more calcium than milk, 4x more vitamin A than carrots, 7x more potassium concentration than bananas, and contains vitamins B1, B3, B6, B12, E, K, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, iron and zinc as well!

2. Kelp

Kelp is a special variety of seaweed that has been a staple in Japanese cuisine and part of traditional medicine in parts of Asia for centuries. Kelp contains high concentrations of iodine, topped with over 70 different nutrients comprised of vitamins, minerals and enzymes for optimal body functions, enhancing your overall immune system and disease-fighting capabilities. 3. Kombucha

A fermented drink that traces its roots in ancient China, whereby it is referred to as the Longevity Drink. It is concocted with brewed green or black tea, a pinch of sugar, and infused with a culture of yeast and bacteria. Drinking it cleanses your entire body system from impurities since kombuchas enzymes along with its probiotics and polyphenols possess powerful detoxifying and diuretic properties that produce favorable effects once absorbed by your digestive system. It is offered in commercially packaged health drinks.

4. Hemp

The hemp plant is made up of certain varieties of the Cannabis plant associated with those smoked as marijuana, which is reason why it has long been ignored, but actually only contains 0.3-1.5% of THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol. Hemp is brimming with omega 3 and omega 6 which are significant fatty acids that help prevent heart disease and skin conditions, and likewise contains high levels of proteins. 5. Baobab

This fascinating tree was mentioned within the most famous work of French writer and poet Antoine Saint Exupery in his book The Little Prince. Baobab has surpassed the nutritional power of most superfoods with its potent edible parts including its fruit, seeds and leaves that are made available for consumption in powdered form. It is subdued with higher amounts of vitamin C than Goji berries, more potassium than bananas, and more calcium than milk. If that wasn’t enough, Boabab serves as a natural cleanser and detoxifier, helps battle fatigue, prevent heart disease, and may aid in weight loss.
